Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve wanted blonde curly hair. So much so, for my 10th or 11th birthday, I asked for blonde highlights and kept those highlights up for years before coloring my hair again. Junior year of college, I had to go platinum blonde for a show. I was so excited! I was finally going to get the blonde hair I’d always wanted.
At this time, my hair had been box black for the past 4 years and my hair follicles were so clogged that going platinum blonde completely ruined my hair! It was so damaged and it broke off so easily. Not to mention the up keep of my roots every 2 weeks was not only time consuming, but eating up at my wallet and I eventually had to go back to my natural brunette. Although leaving the blonde behind was sad, I knew I was going to loose all of my hair if I didn’t stop. Y’all don’t even want to know how many times my hair was bleached in a 2 week span to get the blonde I needed for the show!
Ever since my hair went from blonde to brunette, I’ve dreamed of the day I could be a blonde again. About a year after I had my daughter, balayage stepped onto the beauty scene. This was finally my chance to be blonde again, or at least half blonde, and I wouldn’t even have to keep up with my roots. I jumped on the opportunity and a few hours in the salon later, I had a blonde balayage.
As much as I loved my new blonde look, I couldn’t keep it from getting brassy blonde for more than a month! At this point, I was only washing my hair once a week and even with using my purple shampoo I just couldn’t fight the brass. I was toning my hair at least once a month but still wasn’t getting the true blonde I wanted, but more of an ashy brown.
All of this back story to tell you that I have finally found the golden ticket to keeping my blonde hair blonde…purple shampoo. I know what you’re thinking, “but Jena, didn’t you just say you’ve been using purple shampoo the whole time?” Yes, but I wasn’t using it like I am now.
As most of you probably know, I only wash my hair every 10 or so days. (you can read all about how I do that HERE) My last 2 washes, I’ve started putting in my purple shampoo and washing my hair as I usually would, BUT I don’t wash it out immediately. I leave the purple shampoo in my hair my entire shower and wash it out as the last step in my shower routine. Washing my hair this way took every single bit of brass out of my hair in just one wash! Both times I’ve washed this way, I have gotten multiple people asking me the next day if I’d been to the salon because my hair was looking so bright. Y’all, I haven’t even changed purple shampoo brands I’ve been using the same Shimmering Lights brand for over a year now but am just now seeing results. It has nothing to do with the brand, it’s all about how you wash with it.
My hair has never been brighter and all I’ve done is change the way I’m washing my hair. No more monthly toning in my bathroom and no more trips to the salon with a disappointing outcome. I can get my hair to the blonde I want by just washing it!
